DermaSilk for Active People

DermaSilk Therapeutic Clothing was developed originally with a medical device classification to aid the treatment of dermatitis, eczema and other irritated skin conditions.

It is a unique range of lightweight, body forming knitted base garments made from hypoallergenic medical grade silk with a patented antimicrobial finish bonded permanently into the fabric to help control the bacteria and fungi that cause odour in clothing and can lead to infected skin conditions.

The antimicrobial does not migrate from the silk on to the skin, it is odourless and colourless and maintains its activity throughout the garment’s life even after repeated washing (96% of its activity has been shown to remain after 50 machine washes). This keeps the garments fresh and comfortable even when worn continuously over extended periods of time.

The silk fibres, which are up to 800 metres long, give the garments a smooth, soft and irritant-free feel. The knitted open weave fabric allows the free passage of air and moisture allowing the skin to breathe more easily and improves the temperature and moisture regulating qualities of the garment.

DermaSilk helps regulate body temperature, remaining cool in the heat and providing insulation in the cold. This “Climate Control” effect is vital in active sports, leisure and occupational pursuits where thermal control is important for maximum performance and endurance.

DermaSilk has a high capacity to absorb moisture – up to 30% of its own weight before it begins to feel damp, and can quickly eliminate this moisture whilst the skin remains comfortable. However, unlike many man-made synthetic fibres, DermaSilk does not completely dry out the skin, maintaining a comfort barrier to prevent it from becoming damaged.

Whilst cotton is commonly recognised as the “natural” choice for people with allergic skin conditions, research has shown that the short fibers of cotton, which are spun to form the yarn, can irritate the skin when they become damp. This is because the fibers move in a corkscrew fashion when in contact with moisture and this movement scratches the skin at a microscopic level.

Cotton is also a vegetable fiber and can only absorb about 10% of its own weight in moisture. This moisture is retained by the fibers and the garments then feel cold and damp which in turn causes the wearer to compensate for the loss in temperature by making the body shiver or sweat more.

DermaSilk is worn as a second skin, allowing it to fit under most forms of clothing. This makes it suitable as a base garment for a whole range of sports, leisure and occupational activities and unlike most other fashion branded sports garments, DermaSilk is designed specifically to protect the skin and regulate body temperature under extreme conditions.

DermaSilk Therapeutic Clothing is available in an extensive range of designs including vests, T-shirts, leggings, pants, shorts, gloves and socks with sizes to suit men, women and children of all age groups.
