Our skin is protected by a natural barrier to ensure that it does not lose too much water. This barrier consists of a thin film of fat on the skin surface and structural lipids rich in linoleic acid in the horny layer. The skin barrier is similar in structure to a brick wall with the skin cells representing bricks and structural lipids mortar.
