Our skin is protected by a natural barrier to ensure that it does not lose too much water. This barrier consists of a thin film of fat on the skin surface and structure to a brick-wall with skin cells representing bricks and structural lipids the mortar. Together, they stop bacteria and toxic substances from invading the skin. When structural lipids are removed, e.g. through frequent washing, showering or swimming, or they are insufficiently formed. e.g. in age related dry skin, atopic eczema or other dry skin conditions, skin appears flaky and the barrier is damaged.
